The Spirituality of the Politics. The Celestine Prophecy

The Celestine Prophecy is a 1993 novel by James Redfield that discusses various psychological and spiritual ideas which are rooted in many ancient Eastern Traditions and New Age spirituality. The main character of the novel undertakes a journey to find and understand a series of nine spiritual insights on an ancient manuscript in Peru. The book is a first-person narrative of the narrator's spiritual awakening as he goes through a transitional period of his life.

The book discusses various psychological and spiritual ideas that are rooted in many ancient Eastern Traditions, such as opening to new possibilities can help an individual to establish a connection with the Divine. The main character of the novel undertakes a journey to find and understand a series of nine spiritual insights on an ancient manuscript in Peru. The book is a first-person narrative of spiritual awakening. The narrator is in a transitional period of his life, and begins to notice instances of synchronicity, which is the realization that coincidences may have deep meaning.

The story opens with the male narrator becoming reacquainted with an old female friend, who tells him about the Insights, which are contained in a manuscript dating to 600 BC, which has been only recently translated. After this encounter leaves him curious, he decides to go to Peru. On the airplane, he meets a historian who also happens to be interested in the manuscript. As well, he learns that powerful figures within the Peruvian government and the Catholic Church are opposed to the dissemination of the Insights. This is dramatically illustrated when police try to arrest and then shoot the historian soon after his arrival.

The narrator then learns the Insights, one by one, often experiencing the Insight before actually reading the text, while being pursued by forces of the Church and the Peruvian government. In the end, he succeeds in learning the first nine Insights and returns to the United States, with a promise of a Tenth Insight soon to be revealed. The Insights are given only through summaries and illustrated by events in the plot. The text of no complete Insight is given, which the narrator claims is for brevity's sake; he notes that the 'partial translation' of the Ninth Insight was 20 typewritten pages in length.

In the novel, the Maya civilization left ruins in Peru where the manuscript was found, whereupon the Incas took up residence in the abandoned Maya cities after the Maya had reached an "energy vibration level" which made them cross a barrier into a completely spiritual reality.

Redfield has acknowledged that the work of Dr. Eric Berne, the developer of Transactional Analysis, and his 1964 bestseller Games People Play as a major influence on his work. Specifically, the "games" which Berne refers in his theories are tools used in an individual's quest for energetic independence.

Redfield originally self-published The Celestine Prophecy, selling 100,000 copies out of the trunk of his Honda before Warner Books agreed to publish it.

As of May 2005 the book had sold over 20 million copies worldwide, with translations into 34 languages. Celestine Films LLC released a film adaptation in 2006. Redfield expanded the concept into a series, which he completed in three sequels:

2.The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight (1999)
3.the fourth and final book, The Twelfth Insight: The Hour of Decision, released in February 2011

1. We are discovering again that we live in a deeply mysterious world, full of sudden coincidences and synchronistic encounters that seem destined.

2. As more and more of us awaken to this mystery, we will create a completely new worldview-redefining the universe as energetic and sacred.

3. We will discover that everything around us, all matter, consists of and stems from a divine energy that we are beginning to see and understand.

4. From this perspective, we can see that humans have always felt insecure and disconnected from this sacred source, and have tried to take energy by dominating each other. This struggle is responsible for all human conflict.

5. The only solution is to cultivate a personal reconnection with the divine, a mystical transformation that fills us with unlimited energy and love, extends our perception of beauty, and lifts us into a higher self awareness.

6. In this awareness, we can release our own pattern of controlling, and discover a specific truth, a mission, we are here to share that helps evolve humanity toward this new level of reality.

7. In pursuit of this mission, we can discover an inner intuition that shows us where to go and what to do, and if we make only positive interpretations, brings a flow of coincidences that opens the doors for our mission to unfold.

8. When enough of us enter this evolutionary flow, always giving energy to the higher self of everyone we meet, we will build a new culture where our bodies evolve to ever higher levels of energy and perception.

General: This is all a waste of my time. This prophecy. It’s nothing. Why do you fear it so?

Jenson: Because general, in the world it predicts, there is no need for people like you and me.

John: Come on. Given me another chance. (Marjory turns her head away). You’re the one who’s supposed to be so good at this stuff.

Marjory: You are not making this easy on me. I am doing the best I can but God knows I don’t have it all figured out yet.

John: You can start by calming down.

Marjory: I can be a little hard edged sometimes.

I’ve always gotten lost in other people. Guys. Mostly the charming ones. Not stood my ground when it was really important and vowed to myself, not anymore and then you come along, like it is some kind of test for me and I just get angry because I don’t want to slide backwards John.

John: Neither do I. That’s why I want to find out exactly what happened and get through this.

Marjory: The couple thing is the hardest thing to work out. Especially if the relationship feels familiar, feels like I’ve known you before.

You think I didn’t feel it?

Look, when couples first meet, usually there is this wonderful feeling but it almost never lasts. One person gets insecure, starts controlling and wanting more from the other person and the other one gets threatened and backs away and it leads to a power struggle.

John: It doesn’t have to be that way.

Marjory: No it doesn’t. I mean if both people stay connected (to the source/stays connected inside themselves) then whoever has the strongest intuition leads and there’s no competition. Control is shared and that’s the relationship I want.

John: That’s just it. I can’t stay connected. I want to but I’m not there yet.

Marjory: But there is a way John and we all have to work on this one critical thing and it’s what I absolutely need to remember instead of getting angry all the time.

I mean, that’s the eighth insight. It says that instead of taking energy from each other, you give it. All the time, no matter what.

(she takes him to where Father Sanchez is watching Julia go through the translations of the Ancient Scrolls with the Celestine prophecy on them).

Like Father Sanchez is doing. Look at him John. Really look.

(John looks. Father Sanchez is just looking at Julia and energetically giving while she works).

Father Sanchez: Giving energy is a process. When someone’s energy increases, you can see it on their expression. So you look for that higher expression. And in every situation you know their energy is moving into them when you get a feeling.

John: A feeling?

Father Sanchez: On the cliff? When you opened up, what did you feel?

John: I felt a king of completeness. A wholeness, this unmatched euphoria. You’re talking about love aren’t you?

Father Sanchez: Yes. Giving is the secret to keeping yourself connected. Because your energy, you love, builds up in you first as it flows out to others. It’s what the saints have always known how to do.
It’s what you and I have to do now to help them (looking at Marjory and Julia, the two scholars who are working on the translations of the Ancient Scrolls).

(Julia finds something in the translations and calls over Father Sanchez and John)

Julia: It means roughly to amplify. I thought it just referred to one person giving energy to another but now I think it’s something more.

It’s one thing to just give energy. But if we give it to someone who is also giving it back, then we build energy among ourselves. It amplifies back and forth. It says if we were all doing this, humanity would take another step in evolution.

Jenson: So where’s the 9th scroll?

You should have come with me. Before, when I gave you the chance.

John: You’re going to destroy the ruins aren’t you? (The Celestine ruins in Peru, where the Ancient Scrolls have been found)

Jenson: Let’s just say there are certain people out there who want certain things to happen. Your prophecy isn’t one of them.

How did you think this would end?

John: If you only knew what the prophecy says. How the world really is.

Jenson: The world is the way it is because we make it that way. When there’s prosperity, we create it. When there’s war, well, sometimes war can be useful too.

John: You want to destroy this democracy?

Jenson: Not destroy. Limit. Progress depends on peoples willingness to be led. The world has changed. Religious fanatics are threatening everything. Now this prophecy pops up after hundreds of years. Oh yes, I know all about it. We have our writings too. We’ve always known the dangers of what it promises. This dreamy liberation. The illusion of security. It undermines everything.

John: It’s not an illusion. It’s real. It’s the only thing that’s real. Trying to control isn’t the answer.
When we find the true God experience, no fight over who’s religion is best, it fades. There’s just one truth.

Jenson: You people. So naive. Thinking there’s something spiritual guiding this world. Well, there’s nothing out there. Just us humans. And those of us who know that will always be in control.
The way of the world is POWER.

(As Jenson speaks, John has a memory of being executed by him in a former life).

John: I can’t let you do this.

(Jenson tries to stab him to death, but John deflects him so that Jenson accidentally falls on the bomb equipment, he was preparing for the Celestine ruins. John escapes by leaping into the well that he had foreseen in a vision. The whole camp is blown up and all that remains of Jenson, when John climbs out of the well, is one trainer, burnt to a crisp).

(Marjory is reading the 9th scroll as it magically appears in front of her and Father Sanchez and John, helped by many people ‘on the other side’)

Marjory: The guidance within evolves the world towards a heaven that is already here. To know this is to know our destiny.

John: It’s where evolution is taking us! Where it’s always been taking us. That’s the 9th insight!
